My name is Andrew Grisinger, and I started this website OzAI Built Futures in July 2025. My journey began after completing a Bachelor of Environments & double Masters Degrees in Civil Engineering and Project Management from Melbourne, and over five years of consulting experience as a civil design engineer in Australia’s urban and land development and infrastructure sectors. I’ve worked at several leading engineering consultancies across Australia on diverse projects, from managing urban design for major shared paths and leading road design workflows for large renewable energy initiatives like Snowy Hydro 2.0, to delivering design of critical drainage infrastructure for numerous multi-story residential and commercial developments, large-scale subdivisions, and assessing development feasibility across multiple sectors.
Throughout my career, I’ve consistently pondered the ‘wicked problems’ of our industry – those complex, interconnected challenges with no easy answers. These are the issues that demand more than traditional thinking; they require a holistic and comprehensive understanding, coupled with strategic foresight, spanning diverse disciplines, projects, industry sectors, skills, knowledge and geographical locations. This realization led me on a personal quest for better analytical tools.
The inspiration for OzAI Built Futures crystallized from moments exploring Australia’s Wicked Problems with Advanced AI, specifically Large Language Models (LLM’s). I began to actively prompt LLM’s such as Gemini and ChatGPT on some of Australia’s most pressing and challenging issues: from addressing Australia’s critical housing shortage, the future of electric vehicles and transport planning, and improving our public transport systems, to Australia’s ageing energy infrastructure. LLM’ uniquely empower OzAI Built Futures by rapidly synthesizing vast data and simulating complex urban scenarios, delivering profound insights into Australia’s wicked urban challenges beyond conventional analytical capabilities.
As the Victorian government continues laying tracks, digging tunnels, and paving roads to the tune of $208 billion in major infrastructure projects, with another $132 billion in capital projects budgeted for 2024-25 and beyond, the need for advanced insights is clearer than ever. I began using LLMs to enhance my understanding of this dynamic urban environment by efficiently processing vast amounts of diverse data – from public feedback to sensor readings – and by simulating complex urban scenarios to inform planning decisions. LLM’s essentially act as powerful analytical tools, offering incredible insights and facilitating more responsive and sustainable city development.
I explored how AI could provide critical insight into some of Australia’s most complex and controversial projects, including the Sydney and Melbourne Metro Tunnel Projects, Snowy 2.0, WestConnex, and the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail. Furthermore, I investigated how AI could assist with the planning of the Brisbane Olympics and the construction of a new multi-purpose stadium in Tasmania. The depth of insight these AI models could provide, based on their ability to quickly analyze vast amounts of information and data about our urban environment, was truly profound and valuable. This kind of critical insight into these highly complex and challenging projects is something our conventional approaches and analytical tools often struggle to provide.
Many overarching issues contribute to the controversial and complex nature of these projects, including Cost Blowouts and Delays, Social & Environmental Impacts, Planning and Governance, Workforce Shortages, Indigenous Cultural Heritage, Political Interference and Policy Instability. While AI could generate incredible content and insights on these very issues, it quickly became apparent that the critical problem was that AI-generated content needs to be meticulously verified by humans for accuracy and authenticity. This wasn’t about replacing human expertise, but about amplifying it – ensuring the brilliance of AI was grounded in validated reality.
OzAI Built Futures was born from this vision: a platform to address the intractable challenges I saw daily, by combining the best of human experience with the validated power of artificial intelligence. Our unique methodology, which meticulously integrates strategic AI prompting with iterative human analysis and collaborative expert validation, is at the heart of this mission.
